Canon EOS 300D

Me and my EOS 300D One of my Christmas presents was a “new” camera – a Canon EOS 300D. Those of you who know about cameras will know that the 300D is not exactly a new model – in fact, it was launched over 5 years ago. This specific camera was in fact my dad’s camera, but he’s since acquired a Canon EOS 450D, so his old camera was passed down to me.
It’s my first SLR camera and I’m still getting used to it, but I used a trip to the coastal town of Scarborough today to get a bit of practice. The photos will look dull because of the weather – which was dull all day.You can see them in this Flickr set.

  1. Congratulations!
    Some top tips:
Get a better strap, such as the optec or R-strap.
Also, get a 50mm 1.8 lens – it’s around £70.00 from Warehouse Express. It’s worth it for portraits with very shallow depth of field.
    Regards,
    Rob…

  2. I really loved the black & white shots from that Flickr set.

  3. The 50 mm 1.8 is fantastic. eBay sellers offer it, new, for around £50 if you’re lucky. It’s a bit plastic, but the image quality, bokeh (stopped down a bit) is great.
My first SLR was a 350D, very similar though different body style. I found the following very useful reading:
http://photonotes.org/articles/beginner-faq/ (I devoured this completely and actually began to understand what my photographer friends were talking about).
    http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos (geeky lens tests!)
Have fun – look forward to seeing pics on Flickr.

  4. Thanks for the tips guys. I also have an 80-200mm long lens with it as well, but may have a look out for other lenses as and when I have some money.

  5. Without commission (sadly!) I can recommend this guy: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140292094263&ssPageName=ADME:B:FSEL:US:1123
The telephoto sounds nice, good opportunity to do some tele-landscapes maybe?
Also did you know, you’re number two for ‘neil blog’ on Google?

  6. Greetings from across the pond. I am awaiting delivery of my Canon EOS 300D (Rebel in the states) on Monday. Nice pics in your Flickr album, and best of luck as you and I learn DSLRs.
    Obama cheers,
