I’ve made a bit of a change to the site, namely the introduction of a little more Google Adsense advertising below the body of each entry on the entry pages, plus one after the third entry on the home page. I just want to know what you people think – does it stand out too much or distract from the main text of the page? Does it look like I’m selling out?
I don’t want the pages to be dominated by advertising and people to put off by them, but some extra revenue from the adverts would be welcome.
Update: I think Joe has a point when he says that a lot of dodgy sites overuse Adsense advertising. When looking over the pages, I do feel it degrades them slightly if they’re inundated with Google adverts. As such, I’ve moved the link units to the bottom of the pages. Sure, they’re unlikely to attract as much interest there but I think it looks better.

  1. Looks OK for now, but may get irritating if I click a link accidentally!

  2. Neil, I think this type of Google advertising (dotted all over) is used by various bad site.
The thing about your site is that it is clear and spacy! It’s great as it is. Don’t change it, it’s too intrusive that way, and link units don’t get lots of hits anyway.

  3. can’t really notice the ads, only if i make an effort to look for them.
    its ok πŸ™‚

  4. Looks fine to me – Adblock strips the ads out anyway, so I mightn’t have noticed at all if you hadn’t said! πŸ˜‰
I can at least confirm that it degrades well, and there are no odd blank spaces.

  5. Neil, I think that the Google Ads in the sidebar are fine (is there any site without them or similiar advertising these days?)…I’m not a huge fan of Ads below or between posts though…but I guess that’s just a personal preference…

  6. You should give them a different background colour so people know they’re an ad. I know your click rate will go down (slightly) but it’s a bit nicer to users!
Personally I’d love to have a cookie on my site that wouldn’t display the ads for regular visitors because I reckon click throughs come from people who’ve stumbled on to my site from search engines anyway.

  7. Not a fan of google ads πŸ™‚ I took it off my site some time back!

  8. Looks of to me, doesn’t impede the layout at all.

  9. Neil,
Looks fine to me – sites don’t run on thin air, do they?!

  10. Honestly, I primarily read your site through an aggregator (Bloglines) and only come here to comment. You might want to try work out how many people aren’t even seeing the ads in the first place πŸ˜‰

  11. Have to say, seems a little too much adspace for a blog, and it does detract (10 or so adsense links on this page alone, ugh) – but it’s your site, so your call really. But you did ask for opinions. πŸ™‚

  12. Does anyone know what is required for the website to get money off the ‘link ads’? Does the reader have to click a link first, and then click one of the links in the list? Or is it enough for the reader to click the link to the list?

David, it depends on the provider. Google ads are pay-per-click and on link units PPC per click on the link unit’s page.
    Hope I’ve helped
