Today I went with my parents and a couple of family friends to York’s National Railway Museum, since one of the friends had never been. Naturally I took my camera and I have uploaded some of the photos I took to this Flickr photoset (there’s more to come when I get around to it).
In one part of the museum, their extensive collection of railway signs is on display, and there are some quite frankly bizarre signs up there. I took a few photos of them, so, for your viewing pleasure, here are:
- A reminder for when you leave the toilet
- The penalties for throwing stones at trains
- Instructions for men employed by farmers
All three were, as far as I can tell, on display on or around British railway lines at some point.

So women are allowed to “cross the main lines to fetch milk cans”?
