Firewall in overdrive

It’s times like these when I’m glad that I have a firewall, even if it is only ZoneAlarm Free. I’ve had 50 incoming alerts blocked in the past 2 hours, most of which are for ports 135, 139 and 445, which are used by the MSBlast worm to spread itself. Scarily, many of these intrusion attempts are coming from people on the same ISP as me, including two from other users living in York.
As it is, the system is already patched anyway, but I’d rather these attacks didn’t reach the software layer in the first place.
Interestingly, NTL do print on their self-install manuals that use of a firewall is encouraged, but neglect to say where you can find one. I’m sure if they popped a copy of ZoneAlarm Free or Sygate on a CD and included it with every signup then we’d have less of an issue.
Added: It looks live even Bradford got infected. And yes, all students and staff do get anti-virus software.

  1. In the last hour, my office firewall has gotten hit over 100 times by that damn worm. I could kill people who don’t patch.
