Foursquare Thursday – Topguest

It’s been a while since the last Foursquare Thursday – almost two months in fact – but I’m aiming to revive it again for a few weeks at least. This week, I’m going to focus on a site which rewards you for some of your Foursquare checkins, called Topguest.

If you’re a member of a rewards programme for any of the major international hotel chains – Hilton, Best Western, Holiday Inn etc. – then Topguest will help you gain extra rewards points simply by checking in on Foursquare, or Facebook Places. You’ll also get points for posting a tweet from the hotel (with the hotel’s location added to the tweet), or taking a picture with Instagram (again, with the location enabled). Gowalla used to be supported but isn’t anymore; if you use Gowalla, get yourself a Foursquare account if you don’t already have one and then share your ‘stories’ with Foursquare.

You’ll need to create a Topguest account, provide it with your reward programme details and then link it to the other services. Then, when you visit a participating hotel – either to stay, or just to meet people, have a drink in the bar or eat in the restaurant – check in on Foursquare, and within around 48 hours Topguest will credit your rewards account with bonus points. You also get bonus points simply for signing up to Topguest.

I’m a member of Priority Club, which is the reward scheme for Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza and Intercontinental Hotels – checking in to a Holiday Inn Express in Manchester last week got me 50 Priority Club points. This isn’t much – most rewards cost at least 10,000 points – but it’s better than getting nothing at all, and regular travellers should gain a few hundred points quite quickly. If you don’t mind annoying your friends by also tweeting about it, taking a photo and posting about it on Facebook, then you may get points even more quickly.
