You could try the instructions given here or here, or just browse the iPod support pages. It should be fixable, unless you have a dud unit.

I have an ipod which i bought from Ebay and it has 900 songs on it. I have heard that if i plug it into my computer all those songs will be erased. Is there a way of keeping those songs and being able to plug it into my computer without those songs being erased? I have already thought of downloading all 900 songs from a free file sharing program but it would take too long. If you could help me out that would be great.
